Canada Names 2008 Training Squad

Canadian selectors have named the 2008 training squad.

For the first time in many years a large contingent of players have been selected from Provinces other than Ontario.

Canadian selectors have received a lot of criticism in previous years for ignoring players not from Ontario’s T&D League but with 47 cricketers included from Quebec, British Columbia and The Prairies, they seem to have at last made an effort to acknowledge leagues from the entire country.

Pleasing also is the high number of new names in the squad and the long overdue non-selection of some of the veterans.

A national championship will be held in 2008 with players from the Provinces able to test themselves against the best in the country.

Canada’s overseas based players were not selected but may still be considered at a later date.

The full squads come courtesy of the Cricket Canada website.

  1. This is a good step.
Players outside of the T&D league need to be acknowledged.
There are plenty of talented cricketers spread around the country.
In British Columbia alone there are 85 teams that play in three separate leagues, accounting for approximately 1275 senior players.

This does not count junior teams.

there are 86 teams in the T&D League in Ontario.

  2. Yes, it is good that some of the older players have finally been dropped but their are still some odd selections of players that have seen better days. Also some noted young, Canadian-developed talent has been ignored again. Things change slowly at the CCA. Well, at least Zubin Surkari is back in the fold after a solid domestic season last year.

Good to see that you started your own blog for cricket outside the test world, Ben.

  3. Thanks for the support Ray.

Yeah, things do change slowly at the CCA.

I wonder when a program will start that will attempt to take the sport to the broader community?

It’s fantastic having a large base of expatriates and sons of expatriates but if just a little bit of effort was made to widen the market, Canada could have 30 or 40 thousand players in no time at all.

    I wait in hope.

  4. It’s interesting to note that Cricket Canada have removed this information from their website.

Could they be planning to announce brand new squads now that controversial selector Errol Townsend has resigned?

Townsend was often criticised for choosing older, less fit players in the national squad and has also been seen to favour players from one club in particular.

Fans in Canada are rejoicing over his departure and hope that a new era of transparency and open-mindedness will be ushered in.
