Uganda Votes in New Cricket Chairman
Dr Kato Ssebbale has been elected as the new Chairman of the Uganda Cricket Association.
Ssebbale replaces William Kibuka-Musoke, who’s reign at the helm has been marked by controversy, claims and counter-claims.
It has been alleged that previous captains Joel Olweny and Junior Kwebiha were snubbed for speaking out against the Kibuka-Musoke administration. Insiders also claim that that man of the match prizes donated by Pakistan during the 2007 20/20 series have gone missing. UCA officials have also been accused of affording themselves exorbitant expense accounts while on tour with the national side in Windhoek, Namibia, during the World Cricket League Division 2 tournament in 2007.
Selection policies have also come under scrutiny. Several players have found themselves out of the national side for supposed breaches of discipline. The squad for the tour to Namibia was noted for several perplexing non-selections and it came as no surprise when the side performed poorly.
For a time there, issues were arising that were holding the game back slightly in Uganda.
With a bit of luck, a lot of these problems can now be sorted out.
Yes, this is a key moment in the development of Ugandan cricket.
In the last 12 to 18 months, Ugandan cricket has just run off the rails slightly.
This unproductive period hasn’t lasted long enough to do any permanent damage fortunately but there was a danger of Uganda falling back quite badly if changes weren’t made.
In truth, Uganda hasn’t achieved as much as it should have since 2005.
Now it is time to put things right.
The UCA needs to be more transparent from this moment. Junior development standards need to be given top priority. Players need to be respected more and the best squads must be selected without the slightest hint of bias, nepotism or political interference.
Hopefully now Uganda can focus all their attention on the World Cricket League Division 3 tournament, although it could be more difficult this time around. I honestly feel that with a full strength team including Waiswa, Kwebiha and Mukasa, the Ugandans are very capable of competing with the top associate nations.
Yeah absolutely Tom.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could finally see Uganda field a full strength side
I suppose in the building of a strong cricketing nation we have to expect a few bumps along the way.
So many promising nations are hindered by poor administrative practices and unfortunately the ICC are bound constitutionally not to interfere.
