An Interview With Afghanistan’s Taj Malik Alam
Taj Malik Alam is the Secretary General of the Afghanistan Cricket Federation and national team coach. A passionate and proud man, he is not afraid to talk up his country’s cricket stocks and with good reason, for it is due in no small part to his efforts that Afghanistan is perhaps the most exciting and talked about emerging cricketing nation.
Taj Malik Alam lives and breathes cricket. In an interview with the Asian Cricket Council he stated that he dreams of the day when his country, God willing, will beat one of the full members. Maybe that day isn’t so far away. Cricket is growing at a rapid pace in Afghanistan. People of all ages are taking an interest in the game, facilities are being upgraded and international results are very encouraging.
Sadly, Afghanistan is famous for war, bombs, fighters and peace keepers. Taj Malik Alam believes that his country can be more famous for it’s cricketing prowess.
Stinga: How was cricket introduced into Afghanistan?
Taj Malik Alam: After the Russian occupation of Afghanistan, millions of Afghans fled to Pakistan where they saw cricket being played on television. Many youths found trust in this game. In 1998 we announced trials for the national cricket team and hundreds of people came and were keen to play for Afghanistan. The journey started then and now we are knocking on the international door.
Stinga: How did the Taliban react to cricket’s emergence in Afghanistan?
Taj Malik Alam: Actually, the Taliban were against all those fashionable sports and they loved to watch simple sports like wrestling and other traditional pastimes. Once they attacked a cricket match during prayer time and shaved the players heads.
Stinga: Is the current Government supportive of cricket?
Taj Malik Alam: Now that we have the ACC 20/20 Championship, everybody has been affected by cricket. Now everybody wants to see Afghanistan attain a high level.
Stinga: In what regions of Afghanistan is cricket played now days?
Taj Malik Alam: Cricket is now played in most parts of the country and is particularly strong in the South, South-East and Central areas.
Stinga: How is domestic cricket structured in Afghanistan. Do you have a national competition that features teams from around the country?
Taj Malik Alam: We have a very good one day inter-provincial competition and it’s very interesting when these teams play each other and thousands of cricket lovers come out to give encouragement.
Stinga:Describe the grounds in Afghanistan: Are we talking dry, dusty fields and concrete pitches or are there some lush green outfields?
Taj Malik Alam: In June this year, the Afghanistan Cricket Federation will open it’s first ever specialist cricket ground. Currently we have a cricket academy with three turf wickets provided by the Asian Cricket Council. The ACC also provides us with a bowling machine and silicon coach software for video analysis.
Stinga: Does the ACF plan to construct turf pitches?
Taj Malik Alam : As I mentioned we have three turf wickets at the academy and we are planning to have two turf wickets at the new ground.
Stinga: How many people do you estimate are playing cricket in Afghanistan now?
Taj Malik Alam: There are 12,000 regular cricketers busy playing in Afghanistan.
Stinga : How popular is cricket amongst Afghan citizens?
Taj Malik Alam : Cricket is the number one sport in Afghanistan. Daily, many people are joining our clubs and association teams. The National Sports Committee confirms that cricket development is remarkable.
Stinga: I suppose the time is coming when Afghanistan will need a fully fledged international standard stadium?
Taj Malik Alam: The new ground will have green grass, dressing rooms and other facilities but there are not so many organisations ready to invest money and make an international standard cricket ground.
Stinga: How much assistance do you get from your test playing neighbours as well as the ACC and ICC?
Taj Malik Alam: The ACC is very co-operative and very keen to support us because we have shown our talent in all their age group tournaments. The MCC and the Pakistan Cricket Board are also very supportive.
Stinga: What does the ACF need to do to become a top ten cricketing nation?
Taj Malik Alam: To have good grounds and facilities and to secure financial support. We are faced with many financial problems and are unable to give salaries to our players but we hope to have a strong team in the next five years.
Stinga: Is there a junior development program in place?
Taj Malik Alam: Yes, we have launched the school development program and have distributed equipment to many schools and we also have age group tournaments. We are current ACC runners-up at u/19 and u/15 level.
Stinga: Do you think school cricket should be a priority in Afghanistan?
Taj Malik Alam : Yes, most of the age group players come from the school system. It is very important to start at grass roots level.
Stinga: Tell us about the problems with verifying correct date of births for some junior players. I suppose not every youngster has a birth certificate?
Taj Malik Alam: Yes, it is very difficult because most of the players are not born in a hospital. Afghanistan people are not entrusted to keep age verification records. There is a famous joke in Afghanistan where one person asks another “How old are you?” The person answers “I am 22″. After five years they suddenly meet again and when once again asked how old the man is, he replies “I am 22″. The second man asks “how can you still be 22 after all this time?” He replies “I am a Pathan and believe on one talk.” hahahahahahaha
Stinga: Would you say that the World Cricket League Division 5 tournament to be held in Jersey later this year is Afghanistan’s most important tournament to date?
Taj Malik Alam : It is a very important tournament. We do not want to miss out on the 2011 World Cup. We are well prepared for this tournament. Oman and UAE recently beat Division 2 teams, so I am sure we can easily crush Division 5 teams.
Stinga: You will have some high quality opposition there. Nepal, USA, Jersey, Botswana and even Norway look like they could be a threat?
Taj Malik Alam: Not at all! We are a very dangerous cricket side and have the ability to beat strong international teams.
Stinga: You must be delighted with the development of players like Nowroz Mangal, Mohammad Nabi, Raees Ahmadzi, Karim Sadiq, Hameed Hasan, Naseer Khan and Samiullah Shenwari also looks promising?
Taj Malik Alam: Exactly. They are very good, talented youngsters. Karim, Nabi and Nowroz are my team super stars. The way they play is lovely to watch.
Stinga: Those of us outside Afghanistan only get the bad news on television. The violence. Is Afghanistan a more peaceful place to live than the media portrays?
Taj Malik Alam: I am living in Kabul and there is no problem here. There is no worry. There are some problems in other areas.
Stinga: What would you say to the established cricketing nations who might be considering touring Afghanistan. Can the safety of touring teams be guaranteed?
Taj Malik Alam: There is no guarantee of life because Allah is doing everything but I am sure there would be no problems for any sports people because Afghans love sport. If Australia visited Afghanistan, thousands of people would come to the airport for the reception and a warm welcome would be held. Many Afghans like Australian cricketers. We held joint training with Mitchell Johnson and Dennis Lillee at the MRF Pace Academy and we found good friendship with Mitchell. Now that he has become a regular member of the Australian side, we are very happy for his improvement. Our player Karim Sadiq bravely faced his 145kph deliveries.
Stinga: It would surely be a big boost if the top 16 ODI nations could play matches in Afghanistan?
Taj Malik Alam: It is our dream to play against the test nations. If that happens at Afghan grounds it will be the day of Afghanistan cricket.
Stinga: Five years from now, where do you hope Afghanistan is positioned in world cricket?
Taj Malik Alam: We aim to become an ICC full member, have ODI status and have at least five major grounds in Afghanistan. I can say we can beat strong teams in the world.

Global Cricket
I thought it was about time I started my own blog. I have followed associate and affiliate cricket since 1998. Tony Munro’s BTTW column was a great inspiration. Global Cricket will specifically focus on the non-test playing cricket nations of the world. At present there are 91 countries that have associate or affiliate membership of The International Cricket Council. Most of these nations aspire to play at the highest level. How are they bridging the gap in standards? Do they have good facilities, strong development programs and sound administrative practices in place? There is a need for cricket to embrace a more diverse cultural outlook if it is to prosper in the future. The ICC’s global development program was first initiated in 1997 and began to really take shape after the 2001 ICC Trophy in Toronto, Canada. Although a new cricketing powerhouse is yet to emerge, it is clear that standards are improving dramatically and in time more nations will be able to compete with the 10 full members. I will be featuring newspaper articles of interest, opinion pieces and articles written by myself and some ideas about expanding the game. Please feel free to comment.-Ben Stinga

“Afghanistan could have qualified for the Asia Cup 2008 instead of Hong Kong but they lost the semi-final because they wanted to reach their 150-plus target in just 10 overs which showed their lack of knowledge.”

Mujeeb works fiancé he is responsible to deal financial maters recently I advise him to leave the job because you even not able to buy a few balls for so how you finance manager I know he don’t have we have only have small sponsor for tour where we making good quality cloths equipment and rest of the money use in the flights after every tour we remain to pay more as a small money comes from ACC for ground I personally sign the agreement of making cricket ground president told me its very difficult to pay 1,50000 USD in 15 moths by chance we start work and pay a small funds to the contractors my brother were un happy from me why to do that but Allah is great now ground complete office building which have 5 luxury rooms also complete and all payment is Done and a very good standard academy is already in the front of players
