  2. Great stuff! Thanks for the information, Ben. Here in Canada these initiatives have not even made it to the CCA website. We just have to hope that the various clubs and leagues can get behind the programs and ensure that the kids have somewhere to play when school is out.

  4. More news for Canadian cricket: A Twenty20 league for 2008.

According to this article, the ICC is supporting Canada as a “priority nation” and will finanacially support the league featuring 4 cities. Players will include national team members, 3 international, junior players and a BASEBALL player.

Hopefully, this will catch on and longer forms of cricket will benefit and the women’s game will benefit from increased publicity.

  5. Is it really a developing sport in canada. Do you firmly believe that it can become as popular as some of your national sports.

This would go against the grain surely of usual canadian and american sports that tend to be fast and dramatic. The beautiful game of cricket i wouldnt normally associate with something the average american or canadian would find exciting.

please have a look at my blog see wat you think.

  6. Tom, I don’t know if starting a Twenty20 league is the answer to making cricket popular in North America. In fact I have some serious doubts about this venture. However, it represents an attempt to break out of Canada’s dependence on ICC money and tap into the base of cricket fans in this country. Other than the United States (which the ICC doesn’t want to touch until they get their act together) Canada is the best suited Associate for this effort. As such, I have to applaud the endeavor.

Will crowds come out to watch? What venues will they use (no cricket stadia in Canada)? Can matches be broadcast on national TV for mainstream audiences to see? Again, I have some doubts and must hope that the ICC is overseeing the effort and doing considerable planning behind the scenes because the Canadian Cricket Association does not have the expertise to carry this off.
